Cooking and preparing delectable dishes for children can be fun and exciting for people who have passion in cooking but feeding kids is sometimes challenging. When serving food for children, it is also important to ensure that kids receive proper nourishment. This lens contains some kid friendly favorite recipes and some tips on how to manage kid’s eating problem.
When I studied Nutrition, I learned about eating problems common in children. One of them is selective eating. Children with this type of eating problem eat a narrow range of foods, just five or six that are usually carbohydrate-based. It is hard to get them to try new foods because they may wretch.
I experienced preparing food for a child with eating problem when I was asked to look after my niece. She was choosy with food. She would only eat her favorite chips and rice. Good thing I learned some tips on what to do in such cases. I was happy for the good results. It made her try new food.
Here are some tips on feeding kids:
1. In preparing kid friendly favorite meal, offer a variety of color and texture. Create food that is eye catching. Be creative. Serve food attractively.
2. Include at least one of your child’s favorite food.
3. Offer a variety of healthy food. Ensure to serve a balanced meal.
4. Invite his friends to eat with him.
5. Involve kids in a simple food preparation to satisfy their interest and curiosity.
Here are Kids Friendly Favorite Recipes:
TUNA BAKED MACARONI
Ingredients:
3 cups elbow macaroni
1 can Tuna Flakes in oil,drained
1/4 tbsp oregano
3 tbsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups milk
1 chopped white onion
3 cloves minced garlic
1/2 cup cheddar cheese
1 cup provolone cheese
2 tsp paprika
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Procedure:
1. Cook macaroni to package instructions.
2. Melt butter and cook flour until in it until coated. Pour in milk and whisk to form roux.
3. Mix in 3/4 grated cheddar and provolone cheese until melted and set aside.
4. Saute onions and garlic in olive oil.
5. Add Tuna Flakes and continue sauteing for 2-3 minutes.
6. Add the macaroni and cheese sauce and season with salt, pepper, oregano, and paprika.
7. Place in a baking pan and top with remaining cheese. Bake for 20-30 minutes in 350 deg F oven until cheese melts and browns a bit.
* Tuna is an excellent source of Omega 3, EPA and DHA that is good for the brain and heart.
Meatball Hero Sandwich
Ingredients:
350 g ground beef
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pc small onion, chopped
1 pc small egg
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 tbsp parsley
1 tsp iodized fine salt or
1 Tbsp rock salt
1/4 tsp pepper, ground
1 pouch (250 g) Sweet style Spaghetti Sauce
7 pc hotdog buns, split into 2
7 slices quickmelt cheese
Procedure:
Combine first 8 ingredients. Mix well. Form every 1-1/2 tbsp of mixture into balls. Deep-fry until golden brown. Slice each meatball in half.
Simmer spaghetti sauce for 5 minutes. Add meatballs, salt and pepper to taste. Allow to simmer. Set aside.
In each hotdog bun, place 4 halves of meatballs and 2 tbsp sauce. Top with cheese and toast for 1 minute or until cheese melts.
